Fallout 3 will be free on Epic next week

Every week, a new set of free PC games are released on the Epic Games Store, and when that happens, we get to take a look at what’s coming next week. So while you’re shopping for free copies of the Darkwood horror and colorful roguelike adventure ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove, you may notice that starting October 20 you’ll be able to get your hands on a free copy of Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition, one of the best role-playing games ever created.

Fallout 3 marked a turning point in the history of the series: it was the first attempt by Bethesda Game Studios to bring to life the franchise developed until then by Interplay and Black Isle. It also marked the series’ first foray into 3D: all previous Fallout games used a Diablo-style top-down isometric view, and Fallout 3 abruptly changed the first-person perspective.

This means we were able to experience the Capital Wasteland, what’s left of Washington DC, in a completely new way for the Fallout series, and the transition was an eye-opener. However, it stayed true to its turn-based roots and included the first iteration of the first-person VATS turn-based queuing system that has been a mainstay of the series ever since.

Since this is the Game of the Year edition of Fallout 3, you’ll get the base game and all five expansions. These include Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt (which you can now revisit in Fallout 76), Broken Steel, Point Lookout, and Mothership Zeta (which features an alien invasion).

Fallout 3 will be joined by Shiro Games’ transformational RPG Evoland when it’s free on the Epic Games Store from October 20-27.
