While we could talk about many classic tycoon games, many of which have the word “tycoon” in their titles, we decided to focus on modern times, as the genre is constantly getting new twists and ideas. We also kept the definition relatively broad, as there are many games that you might not think of as strictly “tycoons” that have a strong business or economic theme with mechanics to support it.
From underground and banana republics to trading on the high seas and trading to the final frontier, these are the best tycoon games that we think you should try if you want to know what the best options are in this area. We’ll update this list as time goes on, so be sure to check back regularly.

royal port 4
Port Royale 4, the latest in a long line of serious business simulations, puts you in charge of a trading company operating in the Caribbean at the height of colonial expansion in the region. You start with a ship and must travel from port to port doing business smartly and avoiding pirates.
As you gain wealth and reputation, you can rent out entire cities and build an empire spanning the entire Caribbean with merchant fleets and warships. You’ll spend most of your time serving your home country, such as England, France, or Spain, but if you become powerful, you can become truly independent, provided you survive the War of Independence that follows.
Out of the world trading company
It’s a favorite on our list of the best real-time strategy games, but it’s featured here because it’s essentially a game about expanding your economic power and running an interstellar company. There’s a surprisingly complex business model with over a dozen resources to watch, as well as a player-driven marketplace that will determine what’s worth investing in and what’s not. It also has a pretty good single player campaign if multiplayer or sandboxing aren’t your thing.
Offworld Trading Company offers many DLCs, including one that changes the setting of Mars to one of Jupiter’s moons, Io. Since then, the developer went on to create the historical game 4X Old World.
mega aquarium
Tycoon games have had extensive coverage of theme parks and zoos before, but Megaquarium might be the first aquarium-based tycoon game. The premise and basic gameplay loop is more or less what you’d expect: you’re tasked with turning a small aquarium into a full-fledged center of marine life. However, it stands out as a game that truly cares about aquatic life and shines in every aquarium and information board.
Managing this transformation means that you have to learn a lot about the fish. Much. There may be around 100 different species in your aquarium, and they all require different maintenance procedures and conditions. You really need to strategize when you have a big noisy aquarium, so don’t expect this game to make it to our list of relaxing games.

While this mafia-themed strategy game is still going strong, there’s a healthy dose of “tycoon” in its DNA, as in addition to engaging in turn-based gang wars, you’re also trying to run a respectable mafia business.
From a few humble restaurants to a city-wide criminal empire, you must expand your production of extortion and booze to keep the people of Chicago happy during Prohibition America. Tropic 6
It’s not only a city builder game, it’s also a tycoon game, but it’s still one of the newest management games released in the last decade. As the new president (for life) of the fledgling banana republic, it’s up to you to transform what was once a colonial outpost into a global economic and tourist hub.

You must attract new immigrants in addition to taking care of the existing population, use the natural resources of your island and create idyllic tourist places to attract wealthy travelers. You can even engage in international diplomacy, pitting the great powers against each other and gaining as many advantages as possible. Be careful though, dictators are tolerated for too long and it’s game over if the rebels overthrow you.
Although we recommend Tropico 6 as the newest entry, Tropico 4 and 5 are also very good – you can’t go wrong with either one.
two point hospital
A spiritual successor to Theme Hospital, Two Point Hospital has the same playful sense of humor and unrivaled visualization of medical practice as the original Bullfrog, but with an updated design and unique Two Point Studio twist.
Set in the fictional setting of Two Point County, you must build a medical center from scratch, balancing the needs of your patients and your bank balance while dealing with the minefield that is the private healthcare system. Experience wacky and unique diseases to cure and keep your employees happy too!

Coaster Planet
If Two Point Hospital is the successor to Theme Hospital, then Planet Coaster aims to be the successor to one of the classic tycoon games, RollerCoaster Tycoon. Frontier Developments tries to create the best theme park simulator with sophisticated tools to create even the most ambitious attractions in the real world, plus in-depth simulation that allows you to manage the park as you see fit.
The studio has also invested heavily in community messaging tools, so even if you’re not the most creative thinker, you’ll be able to find something to inspire you on your own trip to the theme park. There’s also a safari park game from Frontier called Planet Zoo, if you’re into that.
Jurassic World Evolution 2
Probably the least commercial on the list, building and running your own version of Jurassic Park remains the core premise of Jurassic World Evolution 2.
