Nvidia RTX 4090 officially demands 850W, but your PC may need more

You’ll soon be able to fit an Nvidia RTX 4090 into your PC, and the flagship RTX 4000 release date is just around the corner, but you might want to check your power supply before placing any orders. Although an 850W PSU is recommended for a GeForce graphics card, you may need a little more power for some Pixel CPU models to work in your configuration.

We knew the RTX 4090 was going to be a power-hungry graphics card long before it was officially announced, and virtually countless leaks described the GPU as a high-wattage GPU. Fortunately, that’s not entirely true, but pairing the most powerful RTX 4000 model with the best power supply money can buy can still be a must.

Looking at Nvidia’s official product page, Founders Edition RTX 4090 builds should work fine with a 850W power supply. board, as underlined Harukase5719this recommendation can break the triple digit barrier, reaching 1000 watts.

The reason for this high power consumption is due to several factors, including aftermarket cooling solutions, factory overclocking, and RGB LEDs. That said, it’s still a significant step up from the best graphics card on the market right now, the RTX 3090 Ti.

If the launch cost of an RTX 4090 gives you the creeps (not to mention the actual price), then waiting for an RTX 4080 might be the way to go. Alternatively, AMD RDNA 3 GPUs can offer performance comparable to Team Green’s Lovelace offerings with much lower power consumption.
