The official Steam Deck is expensive, but Valve could make it cheaper

The official Steam Deck is finally available for purchase direct from Valve after several long months of delays and teasing. However, it is priced a bit higher than some comparable third-party options on the market, but there is a way the company can make it a bit cheaper.

The official $89/£79 Steam Deck includes just about everything you could expect from a device like this. It has three USB 3.1 Type-A connectors, Gigabit Ethernet, as well as a DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 input. This set of ports makes it easy to connect Valve’s portable power station to everything from the best gaming monitor in your office to the smart TV in your living room.

It also comes with its own power adapter, but since the one that comes with the Steam Deck works just fine, we wish the dock was available without an adapter to keep its price down. That would be similar to the practice of selling screens without a stand, which is becoming more and more common among monitor manufacturers, and we’d be happy to see that precedent continue.

We’ll have to wait until we have the official offerings from Valve for review before we can say how they stack up against the best Steam Deck currently on the market. For now, if you can’t justify the cost of an official peripheral, consider the Jsaux Steam Deck Dock, which offers much of the same functionality at a significantly lower cost.
