The surprise announcement of the FFXIV minion corgi during the recent FFXIV live stream at 2pm has dog lovers around the world excited about the new pup to appear in the critically acclaimed MMORPG. The live stream celebrating the ninth anniversary of Square Enix’s multiplayer Final Fantasy featured Live Letter 73 and the announcement of the FFXIV 6.25 release date.
However, some hidden announcements were leaked and details were revealed in a secondary live stream of the event. During a conversation with FFXIV game director Naoki Yoshida, Hironobu Sakaguchi, known as the father of Final Fantasy, made a special request to the MMO team. Sakaguchi is a particular fan of kappa, the Japanese water demons, and said he would like to see a kappa kigurumi (hooded jumpsuit) costume.
Sakaguchi points out that the Water Imp minion in the game already closely resembles the kappa, which is why these creatures have already made their way into Final Fantasy 14 lore.
The other big news that followed was the reveal of the minion corgi. This adorable rookie is expected in patch 6.3, previewing concept art in the secondary sequence of a happy puppy with a yellow bandana tied around his neck. For now, however, the team remains modest about how the magnificent dog will be obtained.
Naturally, fans are already speculating on how to get the pup, which has apparently already been decided. Many believe this may be due to the recently introduced Island Sanctuary mode, while others joke, “Imagine that’s the highest reward”, referring to the most difficult content in the game. Others say that it could tie into FFXIV’s upcoming deep dungeon, which is supposed to arrive in patch 6.3. Whatever the requirement, you know it will be at the top of our 6.3 priority list.
