Hardware Test: WD_BLACK D30 Gaming SSD

Western Digital’s WD-BLACK gaming disc series has been gaining more and more popularity among gamers in recent years, as in addition to performance and speed it offers an adult, “military” moderate design. which also guarantees the longevity and durability of the disc when it is transferred. At the same time, it is not “decorated” with any RGB lights, only a single white light indicates that the disk is working. More or less all WDB drives are similar in this regard, and if they catch your eye, then you will surely like all models in terms of design. Today we’ll take a look at another one that the manufacturer itself recommends primarily as external storage for past and present generation consoles – but you can of course use it on PC or Mac platforms as well.

The power of simplicity

Although the box of the original packaging with the disc is small in itself, the disc itself is even smaller – when you take it in your hands, it looks more like a slightly larger box of matches than a traditional external drive. At the same time, it is also very light (530g), although the case itself is somewhat wider so that the space inside can withstand the heat of the disk during operation. The package includes one cable with a USB-C connector (drive connector) on one side and a USB-A connector (computer/console connector) on the other side.

Connecting to the slot machine is also simple and straightforward. On all supported platforms, the drive registers as a USB flash drive to which you can copy your data as soon as you connect it with the supplied cable. For example, if you only want to store screenshots or videos from consoles (instead of the games themselves) on disk, this basic mode works right away. However, if you want to use the drive to store games or games, you must mark and format the drive as “advanced storage” in the console’s settings.

Reasonable speed

If you use this drive on latest generation consoles or for latest generation games (PS4 and X1), you can play directly from it – in many cases you will burn somewhat faster than the built-in hard drives of older consoles. However, you cannot use this disc for games designed for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series. But you can at least put them on it so you don’t have to download them again next time. All you have to do is move them back from this drive to the new consoles’ internal SSD drive.

When tested on a PC equipped with the appropriate USB Gen 2 connector, we actually managed to achieve the promised speed of 900 MB/s (slightly higher when writing, slightly lower when reading). On consoles, things are a bit more complicated, especially if you’re moving large game files around. There is about 10 GB of cache on the disk for fast storage, and here, unfortunately, the transfer starts to slow down – moving large game files can take tens of minutes. Also, consider the fact that both Xbox Series consoles only have USB Gen 1 connectors, halving their potential speed. As a result, it’s more of a drive suitable for owners of older consoles or for those who don’t move big modern games between internal and external drives too often.

You can order the drive directly from the manufacturer at the WD Store, but it is also readily available in Czech stores.
