RimWorld Biotech expansion lets you have babies and play with genes

RimWorld’s third expansion is called Biotech and it comes with the 1.4 update for the sci-fi management game. It’s a great event that hides leadership, because with the help of biotechnology, your colonists will be able to conceive and give birth to children (both naturally and artificially), meaning your colonies can now literally exist for generations.

Having and raising children, unsurprisingly, presents RimWorld with a host of new challenges, as well as some pretty serious moral dilemmas. With update 1.4, colonists will be able to get pregnant, but you will also be able to raise children in tanks, as well as genetically modify them to create super-soldiers or xenohumans, whose traits are specifically tailored to the alien environment.

There are other ethical issues, too: You can ensure that children raised in your colony have access to education and enrichment, which will eventually lead to more capable adult colonists who have more options when they’re great. Or you can just let them grow in culture tanks to create armies of cheap soldiers and workers, if you run such a colony as we think.

Update 1.4 also includes a new mechanic, the Settler, who has a special brain implant that allows him to telepathically control mechanoids. Mechanoids already come in all shapes and sizes, and the Biotech add-on adds many more.

RimWorld creator Tynan Sylvester said that the Biotech update is meant to bring to RimWorld one of the oldest and most important dramas we know as humans, one that stems from family relationships. According to him, it took some time to get to the point where RimWorld was reliable enough to handle such objects.

“I wanted to make sure we had the necessary development capabilities to make the game deliver such strong family thrills without cutting corners or unnecessary bullshit,” Sylvester writes in the latest update. “Biotech, since we have the longest development cycle for supplements, with the most developers we’ve ever had, I thought it was time to take a bite out of this huge undertaking.”

The Biotech update is expected to hit the RimWorld main branch in the “coming weeks,” but in the meantime, you can try an early build by selecting the “unstable” beta branch in RimWorld’s Steam options menu. Check out our list of the best RimWorld mods if you want to make things even weirder.
