We all love a good Viking game, and Atone Heart of the Elder Tree hopes to shake up the world by presenting Norse mythology in the form of a colourful, rhythmic hand-drawn RPG, far from a hack-and-live survival world. oblique bar games like Valheim.

Atone Heart of the Elder Tree, the brainchild of Wildboy Studios and Untold Tales, is described as “a story-driven, hand-drawn, rhythmic combat RPG” that “combines storytelling, exploration, and music into a very special trip.

You take the form of Estra, the daughter of the last righteous leader of humanity. Since Midgard is completely abandoned by heaven, Estra remains to protect the Elder Tree, a sacred place besieged by dark forces.

While violence is often a last resort (no Walheim fight here), when you fight your enemies it’s to the high-pitched melodic anthems of Australian musician Luminist, providing a soundtrack to which you’ll have to time your moves. Each fight has its own flavor, and the fights are “inspired by the mechanics of games like Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution”.

There are also puzzle elements, but you won’t be able to try to solve them over and over again if you fail. If you make a mistake, you risk losing valuable information, which will alter the course of your journey.

In the trailer, we see our protagonist traveling through many different environments, lamenting that “if I had taken a minute to think, I would have done a lot of things differently.” What these things are is still unknown, but luckily you can try the demo on Steam right now.

As someone who loves all things Scandinavian and creepy, I find this game perfect. I’ve never seen fight scenes so beautifully animated and the in-depth story system feels very well built. It’s a welcome reprieve from the “GAHHH” hack and slash games the Vikings have come to be associated with, and I’m looking forward to immersing myself in a hand-drawn world that explores unique cultures, not just blood-soaked battlefields.

If you’re into all things Scandinavian (look at my last name, I’m sure), we’ve got a full list of the best Viking games on PC, but if you’re feeling more laid back, we’ve also rounded up the best PC rhythm game to pass the time. .
