Overwatch 2’s release date is imminent, which means it’s almost time for Blizzard to say goodbye to its first shooter hero, as Overwatch’s servers shut down in preparation for the transition to a new free-to-play template. As the final hours of the original Overwatch unfold, the fans, streamers, and YouTubers who loved what was considered one of the best first-person shooters on PC during its golden years return one last time.
With the shift from 6v6 teams in game one to a 5-a-side approach with one tank on each team, many players are taking the last chance to line up for their double tanks using classic combinations like Winston and Zarya. double bubble, the impenetrable “double shield” of Orisa and Sigma, or the rather boring combination of Roadhog and Destroyer Ball that the community affectionately refers to as “Pig and Ball Torture”.
Many of the posts on the game’s subreddit reflect the length of time users have spent in the game – add in the seasonal ups and downs for those harrowing competitive games where everything falls apart before your eyes and everything in between. Others take the time to reminisce about the iconic introductory lines Winston heard when he loaded the game, or share sweet community moments from his final days, like this party with Winston at a random lobby objective.
Many of the scene’s biggest Twitch and YouTube names like Super, Seagull, Aspen, xQc, mL7, and Emongg, including those who had almost left their time with Overwatch, also returned to reminisce about the journey. I also personally spent some time this weekend enjoying the final days of Overwatch with some like-minded friends.
Whatever Overwatch 2 brings to the table, and however its free and bold new monetization model works for Blizzard, there is no doubt that it will be a new era for the game. I’ll always remember those magical moves from the game and the many victories snatched from the jaws of defeat (as well as, of course, some of those crushing last-minute losses). Thanks for the memories, Overwatch.
Be sure to stay up to date with all the new Overwatch 2 heroes and Overwatch 2 cards you’ll find in the new multiplayer game. If you’re not sure which character to play, our Overwatch 2 tier list will help you quickly figure out who seems to be the best in the early meta.
