It’s only a matter of time before goal mission 3 gracing shelves to promote the Oculus legacy, and we may have seen a VR headset for the first time, well, sort of. The leaked plans show us what we can expect from the upcoming device, which would target the affordable mixed reality market by merging some of the more premium features of the upcoming Cambria project with the existing Quest 2.

YouTuber Brad Lynch previously showed schematics for the Oculus Quest Pro (codename Project Cambria) that appeared to be confirmed when someone found the device lying around in a hotel room. Now, the content creator has gotten hold of the Meta Quest 3 CAD images, codenamed Stinson, but you can always call it Oculus Quest 3. Yeah, we got lost in the names too.

They mark the return of the Quest 2’s padded strap, which raises concerns about the Quest 3’s comfort and weight distribution, as the battery is front-mounted. The straps may be an improvement over the one-piece design of the more professional Quest models, but the side-mounted USB Type-C port and audio jack mean they may not be compatible with current straps.

A rear view reveals that the headset will likely use the same pancake lenses as the Pro, which are similar to the Pico 4’s lenses, albeit a bit smaller perhaps. There’s also an IPD dial for split adjustment, two side cameras for tracking, and a quad camera array with a front-facing depth sensor for mixed reality.

Surprisingly, the Quest 3 doesn’t appear to support face or gaze tracking in these shots, which Lynch says could be a cost-saving measure. As it follows in its predecessor’s footsteps as a flagship consumer device, it may not put much emphasis on social features like Metaverse and instead aim to be the best VR headset for gaming.

Lynch also expects the device to be powered by a Qualcomm XR2 Gen 2 chip, codenamed Project Halliday in a not-so-subtle nod to Ready Player One. It may also have different levels of storage and memory, going as high as 512GB SSD and 12GB RAM. . Of course, while these CAD designs are real, there’s plenty of time before the official release for the specs to change. As always, treat these details with a good pinch of salt until we know more.
