Recently, dynamic Roblox heads were released on the platform, allowing players to express themselves through various virtual facial expressions. This highly anticipated update to the sandbox game’s avatar format is yet another way Roblox is turning its reputation as a lo-fi kids’ game into a platform where people of all ages can congregate in whimsical virtual worlds. The heads deviate from Roblox’s longstanding static faces that are iconic memes and other references to internet culture.
Roblox officially introduced its avatar facial expression technology to players at the Roblox Developers Conference, which took place September 9-10 in San Francisco. A recent Roblox blog post offers more details on the company’s foray into dynamic heads, noting that the goal is to bring “more accurate human expression to avatars.”
“Avatar allows people to express themselves creatively and express their personalities, and we are committed to continuing to support this beyond mere socializing. Millions of people come to the Marketplace every day to experiment with new looks and try on different looks, sometimes even multiple times a day,” the blog post reads.
Roblox developers can quickly create unique facial expressions with the company’s recently launched Live Animation Creator, which allows Roblox denizens to display facial expressions on their avatars. This process allows Robloxians to “create avatars to convey a wide range of expressions that better suit their mood and better capture emotions and gestures.”
“The tools take advantage of our new machine learning models and dramatically reduce the time and resources required to create high-quality full-body and facial animations. By simply using their device’s camera, anyone can create professional avatar animations in minutes.”
While today’s dynamic heads mostly consist of virtual faces triggered by certain player actions, they should eventually be able to use camera face matching technology to allow Robloxian avatars to react in real time. Ultimately, these avatar expressions may work similar to the technology used for FaceTime Memoji and Animoji. The ability to allow Robloxian avatars to respond with facial expressions is another step the company has taken to create a metaverse where people’s actions can mimic their behavior in real life.
Roblox denizens can now get their first dynamic facial expression heads for free in the Roblox Avatar Store.
