Sales of Cyberpunk 2077 were boosted by the release of Netflix’s hit animated series Cyberpunk Edgerunners. We’ve seen the number of players on Steam grow steadily since the show’s launch, with publisher CD Projekt Red now reporting that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 20 million copies in total.
That’s a lot for a game whose first year on the market was marked by a disastrous launch on the last generation of consoles, performance issues, progress-blocking bugs, and missing features. To make matters worse, CD Projekt subsequently suffered a serious cyberattack and several class action lawsuits.
However, keep in mind that the bulk of that 20 million came in the first few weeks after launch. Cyberpunk 2077 was released on December 10, 2020, and by New Year’s Eve had already sold 13.7 million copies, roughly two-thirds of its total sales to date.
Another six million copies isn’t a cause for concern, though: remember that the original Dark Souls only managed to sell around 2.37 million copies worldwide in its first two years.
“Over 20 million cyberpunks roam the streets of Night City,” CD Projekt said in a statement. tweet announcing a milestone“Hang out with Jackie and meet Johnny, ride with Panama and dive with Judy, hang out with River and listen to Kerry songs.
“Thank you and we hope to see you all in the afterlife!”
The Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 will be released next year.
