Now you can relive Secret of Monkey Island every time you fire up your Steam platform thanks to a custom loading screen mod. While Valve’s SteamOS launch experience is already enjoyable enough, the custom intro takes a pretty nifty nostalgic trip.
The Steam Deck Monkey Island mod shared by Reddit user Superscabo replaces Valve’s animation in the classic point-and-click moment. The only difference between the custom intro and the original scene is Guybrush Threepwood’s intro. Instead of declaring his pirate ambitions, the protagonist says that he wants his own deck from him.
Steam Deck Monkey Island’s intro is a great nostalgic nod to the early days of LucasArts’ iconic adventure series, but it’s admittedly longer than Valve’s intro. Superscabo goes on to say that there is a shorter version of the Steam Deck loading screen, but that will come later.
As well as being a good example of the Monkey Island franchise, it also highlights the customizable capabilities of a portable gaming PC. Another recent Steam Deck mod replaces the splash screen with iconic Star Wars opening titles with an unmistakable John Williams score.
Fortunately, the Monkey Island intro available for download is free, so you don’t have to make your own opening joke.
