The Free Portal DLC comes as a surprise 15 years after Valve released it as part of the Orange Box Collection, and brings the platformer into 2022 in style. Dubbed Portal with RTX, the update doesn’t add any new gameplay elements, but it completely revamps the iconic RTX ray-traced puzzler with Nvidia DLSS 3.0.
Ray tracing is not a new concept, and you probably already know that it adds dynamic lighting in real time if you have a graphics card that supports this feature. The RTX Portal shows how far technology has come four years and three generations later, as each portal you open creates a new source of light for the game to respond to. It is a spectacle of which we are the best witnesses.
The Portal with RTX update is completely free for owners of the original game and will be released in November. Any RTX-compatible graphics card will be able to work with ray tracing and Nvidia Reflex enabled, but the green team says you’ll get the best performance with DLSS 3.0, which only works on GeForce RTX 4000 GPUs.
The RTX Portal is just the beginning as it uses Nvidia’s new RTX Remix tool to create an updated look. It is a modding platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to not only enhance textures, but also create custom assets using the Omniverse. Ultimately, Nvidia will release this tool for free, with which creators can transform any mod-enabled game, including The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. But let’s face it… Portal 2 is the obvious choice.
New Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 GPUs are on the way, starting with the RTX 4080 and 4090. Either of these could be the best graphics card out there, so stay tuned for our review.
