Intel just announced its intention to retire Pentium and Celeron are two iconic brands of processors that first appeared in the 90s. entry level.

In a press release, Intel announces that it will replace the Pentium and Celeron with a stripped-down line of processors called the “Intel processor.” It couldn’t be easier, right? Well, the company says getting rid of brand identifiers will help consumers choose the “right processor for their needs.”

That’s not to say that branding won’t be a blue team issue, as Intel Core, Evo, and vPro aren’t going anywhere. Instead, the move appears to be designed to give each term more authority in their respective fields. In other words, without the Pentium and Celeron, it will be easier to tell the best gaming processor from one designed for ease of use based on name alone.

The Pentium and Celeron are now considered entry-level processors, but both were previously higher up the processor food chain. The Pentium Pro, in particular, redefined the best gaming PCs by incorporating high-speed L2 cache, and the Celeron 300a offered impressive overclocking capabilities at an affordable price.

If anything, the fact that the Intel Pentium and Celeron processors were recently placed in a nursing home is a testament to their heritage. One could argue that a new high-end chip with either name would generate more excitement than a Raptor Lake SKU with a numbered tag at the heart, but removing the Greek terms could make choosing an entry-level processor easier in the long run. .
