steam bridge accessories are becoming more common, but a designer is devising a way to turn a portable system into a flying PC. Dubbed Sol Wheel, the add-on aims to make the best racing games even better on Valve handhelds, and that might keep you from buying the real deal.
Ethan Solodukhin of Esol Designs is behind the wheel, and while the best Steam Deck and SD cards are a handy way to spice up your laptop, the Sol Wheel seems perfect for racing games. passionate. Currently on day 2 of the 60 day campaign, the Steam Deck add-on accessory is in early development, but looks like it has potential.
The video on the Kickstarter page shows how the wheel is rendered and how it can work when attached to a platform and then to a table. A clip uploaded to Reddit last month shows the Sol Wheel prototype in action as Solodukhin drives his car in F1 2022, but the prop could probably be used for other racing games like Dirt Rally, Forza Horizon 5, or Gran Turismo Sport.
According to Esol Designs, the idea behind the Sol Wheel is to offer a “cheaper alternative” to other wheel accessories, adding that it will be “first and foremost” for the Steam Deck. This means the kit may be compatible with other devices, but Ethan hasn’t said which ones yet. It’s also a huge space saver considering most other PC wheels.
The Kickstarter page says the next step would be to add a spring feature to the wheel instead of a rubber band. There are also plans to add more colors and create dashboard features.
The campaign has just two supporters at the time of writing, but its creator is looking to raise $10,000 (£8,671). Remember that there is always a risk when donating to Kickstarter or any crowdfunding project because you are basically supporting the project and not buying the finished product, so keep that in mind if you support Sol Wheel. There’s no guarantee the devs will get to their end or even release a finished product (looking at you Star Citizen), but it sounds like it could be a useful Steam Deck accessory.
