Fallout 3 in real life: a Bethesda fan hides dolls in Washington

Fallout 3 was brought to life by an intrepid Bethesda RPG fan who decided to spend the time between now and Starfield’s release date creating a scavenger hunt using Bobbleheads from the iconic open-world game strategically located in Washington DC.

Bobbleheads from Fallout 3 are small figurines based on the Vault Boy RPG mascot, and collecting them in-game grants benefits to various abilities, such as making your character more proficient with energy weapons or more stealthy. The Fallout 3 map is based on the capital city of the United States, Washington DC, and its surroundings, including the home of Fallout creator Bethesda. Using a 3D printer to make his own figurines, a Fallout fan hid the little statues in places that roughly matched where they would be in the game.

While visiting Arlington Cemetery, Reddit User Mafnxxx plants a bobblehead in a nearby historic home that belongs to the Robert E. Lee family, based on it being in Fallout 3 in Arlington Cemetery. Force Bobblehead can be found at Marymount College, roughly the site of Megaton from Fallout 3, while Agility is hidden somewhere near the offices of Bethesda’s parent company Zenimax, which in-game is usually a heavily irradiated green grass. .

“I used the weekend to visit Washington DC to match bobbleheads to the Fallout 3 map,” says Mafnxxx. “What I found in real life was very different from the game. Deposits not found. Luxurious houses stood in the woods. Most of the places I went were outdoors, and it was harmless. It was tempting to leave Luck in Arlington, but it was more important to respect the land.”

After posting a full gallery of the 20 locations they visited, Mafnxxx received a flurry of responses from other Fallout fans who reported that they had already started finding many hidden bobbleheads. If Fallout 3 is meant to come to life, we’d say it’s far more useful than nukes and deathclaws.
