AMD has just announced FSR 2.1, a major update to FidelityFX Super Resolution that will expand graphics card scaling capabilities. The new version of competitor Nvidia DLSS aims to improve the tool by improving temporal stability and removing ghosting, which will help games look great at higher resolutions without compromising frame rate.
AMD’s press release states that FSR 2.1 “will improve image quality in games while reducing artifacts such as ghosting and flickering.” The company also reveals that the first game to receive support will be Farming Simulator 2022, while Hitman 3 will receive a FidelityFX update in a future update. Game developers can get the tools for free by visiting GPUOpen.com.
Unlike Nvidia DLSS, FidelityFX Super Resolution is open source and AMD confirms that it can be used in competitor products. In other words, you can still boost your framerate with a scaler if you opt for an RTX 4000 GPU over an RDNA 3 GPU when both eventually arrive on the scene with better graphics cards.
In addition to the FSR 2.1 news, AMD announced that 2.0 support will be extended to 11 other games, including Deep Rock Galactic, Destroy All Humans 2 Reprobed, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Scorn. This brings the total number of supported versions to 45 when it launches in May.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to wait for official support, because there’s an AMD FSR 2.0 mod that adds a scaler to games like Red Dead Redemption and Cyberpunk 2077. Whether version 2.1 will receive the same modding treatment remains open. . Get noticed, but unofficially, you can help your favorite PC games shine sooner than expected.
