The latest Multiversus patch, released yesterday, updating the game to version 1.02, brings a number of big and small changes to the game, and one of them is especially interesting because it looks a little strange: Velma, the brain of the Gang. Velma’s passive ability in Multiversus allows her to generate “evidence” when she throws hits that she can pick up during combat. Once she gathers enough evidence, she can call the police, who will come and “arrest” the opposing player, then throw them out of the arena. However, since yesterday, however, this is no longer the case. As described in the 1.02 patch notes: “Instead of calling the police, Velma now solves the mystery and calls in the Mystery SA gang and the Mystery Machine to take out the bad guys.”
No reason was given for the change, but it’s fair to say that the image of Velma calling the police on her opponents – under false pretenses, no less, because she tells them that the other fighter is actually Old Man Jenkins in disguise – is in uncomfortable at a time when police abuse and crime, with near-complete impunity for the consequences, are always under public scrutiny in the US (and in Brazil too). It’s especially weird when she encounters black-based characters like basketball player LeBron James. The fact is that there are many parallels with the real world.

This has not gone unnoticed by the Multiversus community.
Apart from the other hitbox, Velma’s move is functionally identical after the patch, but instead of the police appearing, the Mystery Machine appears and takes the opponent. This has sparked some debate, not everyone taking it seriously, about whether extrajudicial kidnappings are actually better or more justified than police brutality. AntWithNoPants solved this problem with a short post on Reddit:

Interestingly, much of the reaction on social media seemed to focus not on the socio-political element of the change, but on how it would affect gameplay. game director, Tony Hyun announced this on Twitter. that replacing the police with the Mystery Vehicle is both a buff and a nerf: a larger van compared to a police car means it’s more likely to hit enemies, but also more likely to hit it.”
An overhaul of Multiversus hitboxes and damage to tie them in more closely with individual character animations was the real focus of the update. “This will be the process that will get us there, but this is our first step towards truly accurate hitbox and heartbox detection, which gives us a foundation to continually fix issues going forward,” developer Player First Games said in the patch’s release notes.
