Just like pets in an MMO game, companions are an avatar customization option, so you can choose which adorable pets you want to accompany on your quests. In order to turn wild creatures into companions, as well as earn daily loot and Dreamlight, you need to know how to approach them and what kind of food they like.
How to feed the animals in Dreamlight Valley
Each of Dream Valley’s eight animals can be found in their respective biome, but only two of them will spawn per day. You can also feed each creature only once every 24 hours, so make sure you do your best to feed your little friends and reap the rewards.
Feeding the animals can drop seeds and other useful items, including cosmetics and Dreamlight shards. There are also a number of creature feeding achievements that will reward you with Dreamlight.
How to have pets as companions
All you have to do to hire animals as companions is feed each option twice. – and it doesn’t even have to be your favorite food, which comes in handy for the weirder snacks mentioned above. Note that each creature of a different color counts as a unique variant. For example, feed the White Rabbit twice and it will appear in your collection.
To make an animal your companion, go to your wardrobe and select the companions section. Pick one of the ones you’ve unlocked and they’ll follow you for as long as you want, no need to feed them. To see the full list of available creatures, head to the Collection menu.

Rabbits are more playful than squirrels and will play with you before eating your food. When you approach a rabbit for the first time, it will jump before running away. Don’t worry, chase it. It will do this several times before finally settling down long enough for you to interact.

Incredibly cute sea turtles are shy and won’t let you get close to them right away. When you get close to the sea turtle, it sticks its head into its shell and begins to shiver nervously. Wait calmly and don’t move, and eventually it will rear its head again, rearing greedily on its front legs, ready to feast on the shellfish.

If it were possible, raccoons would be even more difficult to approach than sea turtles and would give you an alternative solution.
