Flagship Intel Arc graphics processor it’s coming “very soon” and the best graphics card contender seems to be the RTX 3060 rather than the RTX 4000. In an interview with PCGH, Ryan Schrout, director of marketing for Arc GPUs at Intel, and Tom Petersen shared various information about Arc Alchemist graphics cards. Petersen confirms that the A770 sits between the RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti in terms of performance, clearly ahead of the AMD Radeon RX 6600XT.
As for the specifications, the Arc A770 and A750 GPUs will be available with 8 GB or 16 GB of VRAM. The so-called “limited edition” A770 will remain at 16GB, meaning the 8GB variant will likely be a partner decision.
The new information gives us an idea of what to expect from Intel’s high-end Arc GPU, especially when it comes to comparative performance. It’s now clear that Alchemist will not compete with either Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 4000 lineup or AMD’s RDNA 3, as the specs suggest the cards are aimed at budget gaming PCs.
Intel is clearly taking a “value for money” approach with its Arc GPUs. By controlling the prices of its line, the company hopes to offer an attractive alternative in terms of performance per dollar, but recognizes that the market is difficult. To be successful, the tech giant needs to strengthen its relationships with board partners and ensure consistent execution when it comes to GPU-based products, says Petersen.
The Real Meaning of Intel’s “Limited Edition” Arc
Interestingly, Intel also clarified what exactly the A770’s “limited edition” status means, and it turns out it’s just a brand name. Hopefully, that means it shouldn’t disappear overnight, but the company’s overall GPU shipments could be limited.
As for when the A770 and A750 Arc GPUs will actually be released, Petersen suggests that they will arrive soon and will be available on Intel’s website. Adding credence to the launch date claims, an Intel employee notes that it “should be coming soon” so the company can meet its obligations. Naturally, that means it could appear on the battlefield at the same time as the RTX 4090, but it obviously won’t challenge it.
