The Half-Life 2 VR mod that adds full VR support to Valve’s beloved classic FPS game has landed on Steam ahead of its scheduled September release date. The fan-made project recently announced that players can expect Half-Life 2 VR beta testing to start in September, but there was no certainty that the mod would appear on Steam. It’s here now, and the developer has given a more specific date, so you can expect to play it while you wait for Half-Life 3, which we’re guessing will be announced any day now.
The Half-Life 2: VR Mod release date is September 16.. Of course, you’ll need Half-Life 2 to play it, but you can use any SteamVR-compatible VR headset. Mod developer Source VR Mod Team originally said that they expected to release the beta on Friday in September. Fortunately, its appearance on Steam means that the mod has received official approval from Valve. Given the success of Half-Life: Alyx in adapting a sci-fi setting to a virtual format, we’re excited to see more of Ravenholm and City 17 in full VR. Headcrabs… maybe a little less.
The mod features full room-scale VR with trackable motion controls, allowing you to walk, pick up items, climb stairs, and more, just as you’d expect from a top-tier VR. Most weapons already support manual reloading and aiming, including features like iron sights and two-handed weapons. There’s full left-handed support, as well as accessibility tools including a laser sight and a quick reload feature for gamers who prefer a little more comfort. Comfort options are also available, including a motion vignette and a third-person dash cam.
The team cautions that this early beta may still contain some rough edges, but has laid out a roadmap with plans including additional textures and asset scaling, additional hand animations and poses, and possibly compatibility with Half-Life 2: Episode One. and two. The Source VR Mod dev team also notes that there is currently no teleportation option, though we hope it will be enabled in the future for players who struggle with direct movement in VR.
