At the recent THQ Nordic conference, a new game from the Alone in the Dark series was announced, and I was excited. Not because I’m a fan of the brand, I haven’t played any of them yet (but I’m going to fix it), but in general I’m a fan of survival horror, so I couldn’t get past the game up either. At Gamescom, I was the first to visit THQ Nordic, which boasts the most sophisticated booths this year.
As such, the game takes place primarily on the Durset estate from the first volume, with Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood as the main characters. However, only a relatively short demo of about ten minutes was available at the Cologne exhibition center, which is not the full game. It’s kind of a “playable prologue” called Grace in the Dark. In it, as the name suggests, you play as a little girl, Grace. Anyway, it shows the graphical side, which is quite good, to be honest, a little better than I expected. After all, it’s not strictly AAA title, so I was afraid of a slightly more budget version, but my fears quickly dissipated.
The general atmosphere is great too. This is mostly supported by the great sound system that is the backbone of just about every horror movie, Pieces Interactive really did a great job here. So far, the dubbing has seemed pretty good to me, but I haven’t heard too much yet to appreciate it.
Unfortunately, the demo consisted only of walks around locations, strongly reminiscent of the Virgo demo for Resident Evil Village, for example. Even though there were a few monsters (they look great, by the way), we didn’t get to fight, which is a big shame. It’s just that shooting from the trailer seemed very strange to me, as if the guns had no recoil. We’ll have to wait for another example.
In addition to the fights, we are also waiting for the collection and combination of items or logic puzzles, although I did not see those in the demo either. In any case, I’m very curious what the result will be, whether it will have a well-balanced mixture of combat and puzzles. The developers promise a real survival horror with a very limited ammo, so I hope that it will be so.
Alone in the Dark doesn’t have an official release date yet, but it’s widely believed that the game could come out next year. Coming to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. According to earlier information, the demo I was able to try is also due digitally at a later date.
