08/26/22 David Faber, a financial reporter for US news network CNBC, rejects the idea of Amazon announcing its offer to buy EA, citing insider sources.
A few months ago, rumors surfaced that EA was about to take over, and Amazon, Disney, and Apple seemed to be the first in line for the deal. Well, the number of potential suitors may have been narrowed down to one, as Amazon has reportedly made a formal offer to the company behind Battlefield, Madden, and Apex Legends, with a statement expected to arrive later today. .
When Microsoft announced its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for a staggering $68.7 billion, it was hard to see how anyone could come close to a gaming industry deal of the same magnitude. However, if the rumors of Amazon buying EA are true, we may all be in for a surprise.
After doubling down on its TV offerings recently with The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, it might make sense to curate a catalog of EA games to flip viewers over. If the LotR series goes well, can we see a Dragon Age TV show in the future?
GLHF sources said here that Amazon’s full statement will be released this afternoon. PCGamesN has contacted EA for comment and will update this story with any additional information.
Update: This was followed by statements from David Faber, a financial reporter for the American News Network. CNBC which refutes the GLHF report. Faber says they’ve “talked to people who would really know what’s going on” regarding Amazon’s bid to buy EA, with those sources claiming “nothing’s going on.” He ends the segment by saying “it’s not going to happen today,” which doesn’t completely close the door on the idea, but leaves plenty of skepticism.
EA’s stock price rose to $135.90 following rumors of a possible takeover, but has since fallen to $135.35.
Until then, why not find out what Amazon has in store for you this month with Prime Gaming’s September releases and see what Amazon could be among the most anticipated upcoming PC games of 2022 and beyond. I wonder how long it will be before Amazon manages to own it all.
