As environmental concerns become more pressing, Acer is calling on more partners and suppliers to work together to reduce environmental impact and conserve valuable resources by moving towards a circular economy. With the rise in natural disasters around the world caused by climate change, constructive and collective action is needed to address the pressing challenges.
Combined actions are needed as they can significantly increase the positive impact on the environment. According to the Thomson Reuters Foundation[2]In 2022, efforts to address climate and natural challenges will need to be redoubled to reduce this decade’s accumulated carbon pollution, attempt to maintain a warming ceiling of 1.5 degrees Celsius, and minimize the harmful effects of climate change on the planet and its inhabitants. Realizing the urgency of the issue, Acer is encouraging more companies to join the green movement and shares the progress of its sustainability efforts with partners, suppliers and Acer employees on Acer Green Day, hoping to inspire others. its part for the earth.
Acer began embedding sustainability into its operations over a decade ago. Since 2008, the company has introduced a CDP supply chain for carbon disclosure reporting to identify risks and opportunities in the segment, and expanded coverage to three levels of suppliers starting this year. In 2013, Acer began to significantly increase the amount of recycled materials in the packaging of its laptops. In 2017, Acer launched Project Humanity to bring together all employees around the world to create a sustainable foundation for environmental initiatives and instill a green philosophy into the company’s culture, with more than 70% of employees worldwide participating.[3].
Committed to protecting the environment, social protection and governance (ESG), Acer launched the Earthion program in 2021 and began working closely with suppliers and partners to bring sustainable initiatives to its supply chain ecosystem, with a focus on energy, product design, design packaging, production, logistics and processing. Acer is well aware of the environmental impact of these processes, from product development to manufacturing. The driving force behind Earthion is the belief of each member that their mutual cooperation can effectively make a positive impact on the environment.
As a manifestation of such efforts, in 2021 Acer launched the Vero range of green devices to provide consumers with a greener experience. Vero products are made from sustainable and recycled materials and are designed to extend life, reduce material consumption and reduce total waste.
Responsible production and logistics systems
To combat the environmental impact of manufacturing processes, Acer has stepped up collaboration with partners Compal and Quanta to improve its waste management systems. From reducing the use of plastic bags on the production line to making changes to the production system of suppliers aimed at ensuring sustainability, Acer is working with its partners and suppliers to create more responsible production and logistics processes.
Eliminating excess protective tape used in the pallet wrapping process was one of the changes made to reduce non-recyclable waste in your logistics system. After rigorous evaluation and testing to verify package security levels, Acer has been able to remove unnecessary protective tape from its monitor shipments, which is expected to save about 5,500 km of tape in 2023, roughly the distance from London to New York.
The development of a carbon accounting system for Acer’s transportation activities was another important step towards its environmental policy, especially given that the share of freight and logistics companies is almost 10%.[4] global greenhouse gas emissions. The system provides a unified approach to measuring and reporting Acer’s greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles and will eventually be deployed worldwide.
Green Vero Range
Acer launched the Vero line starting with the Aspire Vero laptop, its first environmentally friendly computer. primary plastic production and waste. The device is also designed to simplify the repair or upgrade process to extend its lifespan without sacrificing performance or computing quality.
Acer Green Day’s announcement of the Acer Chromebook Vero 514 marks the latest addition to Vero’s portfolio, which is expanding to include business laptops, displays, projectors, desktops and accessories, promoting the use of recycled materials across the product portfolio.
The packaging of the Aspire Vero has also been reinvented from the ground up with a design system that spans multiple product lines, device sizes and packaging components. Winning the Red Dot Brands & Communication Design Awards for packaging design, the outer box is made from 80-85% recycled paper pulp, and plastic bags have been reduced by using paper sleeves to protect the adapter. In addition, the laptop bag and the membrane between the keyboard are made from 100% recycled PET. The rest of the packaging is 100% recyclable, and its inner section can even be reused: with just a few extra steps, users can turn it into an adjustable laptop stand.
The balance between sustainability, the use of recycled materials and product longevity has always been a challenge. Acer has worked diligently with its designers and partners around the world, including Golden Arrow, Shin Shin, Sun Young, Quanta and Wistron, to find innovative ways to incorporate greener materials without sacrificing durability and strength. As Acer moves closer to its goal of including up to 30% PCR plastic in its core products by 2025, it continues to look for new, more sustainable materials to develop future products.
Smart urban solutions that help save resources
In line with its mission to develop greener products, Acer is working around the world to develop smart city solutions that reduce waste of resources and create a more efficient and sustainable lifestyle. In several cities, Acer has implemented smart roadside parking and an electric vehicle charging solution that helps drivers find places to effectively reduce road idling and energy consumption, thereby reducing traffic and lowering carbon emissions. Acer has also developed smart solutions to save water, control air quality and improve the overall health of the environment.
Target: 100% renewable energy by 2035
Acer Group joined the RE100 initiative in 2021 and committed to being 100% renewable by 2035. In addition to launching the “Earthion” platform and adopting the global CDP disclosure system, Acer started using clean energy as early as 2011, in some places. even installing solar panels to generate their own energy. As of the end of 2020, Acer offices in over 30 countries around the world are 100% renewable, and 45% of the energy used by the Acer Group is renewable.
Acer believes that sustainability is a global challenge that will require every effort to achieve. Acer is not only committed to empowering consumers to choose more environmentally friendly products, but also wants to enable companies to join their journey towards a low-carbon circular economy.
At Acer Green Day, Acer is also launching the “21 Day Challenge” as part of its Earthion mission to encourage its employees to take green actions every day and make them a habit. Now this task extends to employees of partners and suppliers of Acer, as well as to consumers. Consumers can take part via Instagram in the #Acer21DayChallenge, in which several influential heroes share their stories of reduce/reuse/recycle and activities that integrate environmental action into their lifestyle.
