Immortal Empires Best Starting Positions

So we know where everyone starts, but who has the “best” starting position? Which legendary lord has the perfect place to start conquering the Old World? His mileage will vary depending on who he wants to play with, even if (for the sake of argument) one of the dark elf lords has the best starting locations objectively, it’s unlikely he’ll pick them if he doesn’t like not playing . like dark elves.

However, we take a look at the best starting positions now that we know where everyone starts, taking into account neighboring settlements, other lords, and potential conflicts.

Grimgor Ironhide and Kholek Sun Eater

These two gentlemen, for the Greenskins and Chaos Warriors respectively, represent two very interesting beginnings for those who want the space to grow without too much competition just yet.

With Grimgor starting at Sabertooth Mountain and Kholek starting practically side by side at Summoning Stone, the only real problem these two have is with each other. Otherwise they are surrounded by many small settlements in the immediate vicinity, or the hard map borders to the north.

Go too far east and you’ll find forces from Great Cathay and Great Bastion, and Greasus Goldtooth ogres may spawn from the south. Kholek has a potential ally in the Chaos Warrior Lord Archaon the Everchosen to the northwest, while Grimgor has two green-skinned brothers to the west, Azhag the Butcher and Skarsnik. These starting positions are solid enough that even if you don’t choose either of these two yourself, you have to watch out for their AI drivers, which will multiply as the game progresses.

Morathi

The Dark Elf Shadow Queen also has a lot of cool stuff. Although she doesn’t have as much empty space as Grimgor and Kholek, she has little to no competition in her starting area around the ancient city of Quintex and in the provinces on either side of it, giving her access to various coastlines. To the north of her, there is a minidome of four legendary lords that she will have to control, but to the south, she only has the lizard lord Mazdamundi. If she can drive it out, it will be a strong empire occupying the central area between Lustria and Naggaroth.

Additionally, it has two sea routes off its west coast: one connects it to the east coast of Great Cathay, then there is an underground sea route that allows it to exit Naggaroth’s north coast, opening a new flank for attack.

Grisus Goldtooth

South of Grimgor and Kholek, Grisus exists in the heart of the Ogre Kingdoms with little to no resistance. Also, the settlements he’ll likely surround will be other minor ogre factions, so he’ll probably still be able to team up with the ones he can’t conquer. As his empire grows, he will have to deal with the fact that he will most likely be surrounded: Cathay to the east, whoever wins from Grimgor/Cholek to the north, and to the west there are noble elves and skaven who must look out.

The Greasus player can attempt to access the sea by moving south. Ku’Gath the Plaguefather has moved to Dragonfang Mountain at the southern end of the Dragon Isles, just below Grisus, which could be a problem. The Enchanted Forest also has the vampire Count Helman Gorst, who can also challenge your coastal ambitions; however, if you can hold your own against those two, your southern flank will be a bit safer if you focus your attention elsewhere.

Empire and Great Cathay

While the strength of the Empire’s two core initial lords and dragon lords Zhao Ming and Miao Ying is a matter of dispute, in general these lords have the same advantages as Grisus. They will be surrounded by lesser factions within the same faction, so those who cannot be defeated can join. This will allow you to quickly expand your empire and save the strength of your armies for more serious threats.

The two Lords of Great Cathay in particular have the added benefit of being on the same edge of the map, which in theory means they don’t have to focus on as many fronts. However, the sea lanes should mean that neither the Cathayan player nor the AI can rest easy. The two lords of the Empire, Karl Franz and Balthazar Gelt, will also have the constant problem of being surrounded on all sides. If they can keep the British strong and on the side, that could help with the west coast, and one of the Kislev lords in the north could also be a useful ally.
