Report: After KOTOR Remake Delay, Saber Takes Over

Following Bloomberg’s report of the KOTOR remake being delayed indefinitely in July, people familiar with the project now say Embracer’s Jason Schreier has taken Aspyr’s space RPG and handed it over to Saber Interactive for completion. . Schreier’s sources asked not to be named, although Embracer may have mentioned development changes in its recent financial report, where the media giant said it was transferring one of its AAA titles to another studio in the Embracer group.

Schreyer said dissatisfaction from major stakeholders, including Sony and Disney, was largely responsible for the decision. While Aspyr management reportedly believed the project could be completed in 2022 or 2023, Schreier’s sources believe the new version of KOTOR likely won’t be ready for a few years.

However, Embracer said in its finances that the transition should not cause further delays, and Schreier sources said people close to the project were happy with the changes and believed things would go well in the long run.

Of course, even the KOTOR delay itself is technically unofficial. Aspyr revealed the project at a PlayStation event in 2021 without mentioning a release date or even a timeline, and there have been no updates since then.

Bloomberg’s first report on the KOTOR delay cited problems in the vision of the Aspyr development team and management as the cause of the dispute, and after significant resources were spent creating a “vertical slice”, a demo that showed progress, Aspyr stopped work on the game and archived it indefinitely.

In short, there is still quite some time before we see a new version of KOTOR. In the meantime, there are plenty of space and fantasy games to keep you busy, and even high-quality free PC games if you don’t feel like spending the money.
