Certain Robloxians ages 13 and up can now access Roblox voice chat as part of a beta test on a massive sandbox gaming platform that uses users’ phone numbers for verification purposes, the operator confirmed. Roblox, PCGames N. If implemented, this would provide an alternative form of age verification to the platform’s current requirement that users provide photo ID to verify their age.
A Roblox spokesperson shared the following via email with PCGamesN:
“At Roblox, we believe that the metaverse is for everyone, and our communication experiences that we create should be for everyone too. As part of this effort, Spatial Voice is an important step in realizing our long-term vision for the future of communications. With industry-leading security measures (identity verification, moderation, etc.), individual members of our community can use Spatial Voice to securely communicate with other Roblox users.
“Security on Roblox is at the heart of everything we do. We maintain multiple systems to keep our users safe and work tirelessly to create a safe, civilized and welcoming platform for everyone. This includes identity verification, which we launched last year, and allows us to offer over 13 select users the opportunity to try Spatial Voice in beta. We started with identity verification, but always wanted to expand to other identity verification methods in the future. Today, Spatial Voice requires identity verification, a process that includes providing a government-issued ID and a selfie.
“Since we announced the first test of this feature, we have gradually expanded the group of people who have access to it. It’s a thoughtful process that has taught us how to evolve and expand it with new features like phone verification while maintaining our high security standards.”
Roblox launched voice chat in November 2021. It is only available to users over the age of 13, and the platform requires users to verify their age with a photo as a form of identification. However, this process can become a serious obstacle for people who do not have such identification or who simply do not want to participate in the download process. Without Roblox’s voice chat feature, older gamers turn to Discord and other services.
Removing the need to provide a photographic image could also allow Roblox users to spend more time on the platform, as they no longer have to switch between third-party services to communicate with each other. In recent years, Roblox has gained popularity among older users and managed to retain users who grew up with the platform. This demographic shift also means it’s important for Roblox to continue to find ways to engage its old player base, with increased access to voice chat being one example of such a move.
Giving more access to voice chat could provide more options that will support Roblox’s infiltration of the metaverse. This could reinforce a sense of community among gamers who rely heavily on in-game text chat and give game creators more room to develop games that benefit from voice interaction. These can include games like Among Us, RPGs, and shooters that use contactless chat features. While there doesn’t seem to be a reliable way to access the beta, some people have reported getting notifications when entering games with chat features.
You can find out if you can access voice chat features by going to settings. If the feature is visible, you can toggle the button to enable it. Enabling this setting will prompt a pop-up screen asking the user to allow Roblox to collect, use, and store voice recordings for security and moderation purposes. By checking the appropriate box and clicking “Enable”, the player will have access to voice chat in all games that allow it. Like many Roblox beta features, like the new “exchange” button in the list of reseller goods, the process will be subject to rigorous testing and feedback. It will not be available to all users unless it is implemented.
