A reimagining of the classic adventure game from Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver HD has just been released thanks to an ambitious new fan project.
Released in 1999 and written by future Uncharted creator Amy Hennig, Soul Reaver is the second game in the Legacy of Kain series. It centers on a vengeful ghost-turned-vampire Raziel as he attempts to destroy and overthrow the eponymous Cain.
Personally, I Soul Reaver was a mainstay when it came to renting games at my old local video store: with its distinctive character and level graphics, dark gothic story, and super-challenging difficulty curve, it strikes the perfect balance between high-fantasy and horror. maturity, the forerunner of modern youth games like Life is Strange and of course the Crystal Dynamic Tomb Raider series.
Time, however, hasn’t been entirely kind to Soul Reaver’s visuals – it suffers from the same messy textures and blocky edges that plagued many games of the late ’90s, especially when played on a modern high-res monitor. So thank the lord of the undead for this new fan project that recreates and replaces every Soul Reaver texture from scratch, making the beloved vampire action-adventure that much more pleasing to the eye.
This comes after the Steam and GOG versions of Soul Reaver were pulled from the market when the Legacy of Kain IP was purchased from Square Enix by the Swedish group Embracer, which also owns Gearbox Software, and the developer of Metro 4A. Games. Fans of the series seem determined to keep it alive, and this mod proves that with a few tweaks and textures, there’s still plenty of punch left in the vampire classic.
