Not all Intel Arc GPUs natively support DirectX 9

The Intel Arc GPU launch is not going well, to say the least, as the blue team has yet to release any cards outside of China. It now appears that the company has decided to remove DirectX9 support from its future processors in order to increase the number of pixels and integrated graphics chips in 12th generation processors.

According to a new support article on the Intel website highlighted by a Twitter user. SquashBionic, DirectX 9 games running on Intel Arc graphics cards will use the “D3D9On12” interface instead of the native API. The same goes for all Xe graphics chips running on the company’s current lineup of top gaming processors, plus upcoming Raptor Lake processors. In fact, it emulates it through DirectX 12.

While this means that most, if not all, DirectX 9 games will need to run on Intel’s latest graphics chip, any issues will be resolved by Microsoft, not Team Blue. It’s hard to say how this will affect actual performance, but there’s no indication that AMD’s RDNA 3 or Nvidia RTX 4000 GPUs will take a similar approach.

Fortunately, when it comes to new API versions, things look more promising. The Intel Arc A750 GPU can be up to 5% faster than the RTX 3060 in DirectX 12 applications, including Cyberpunk 2077, Death Stranding, and Hitman 3. Of course, that only matters if the company can bring its cards to a market that is not given at a given time.
