The Samsung 990 Pro is the latest PCI-SIG greenlit NVMe SSD as a PCIe 5.0 x4 compliant device, confirming its existence before the South Korean tech giant can officially announce it. Not much is known about the potentially fast storage solution at the moment, but we can safely assume a few things about it.
Some details about the Samsung 990 Pro on the PCI-SIG site (via VideoCardz) don’t reveal much that has already been overlooked. It uses four PCIe 5.0 lanes to deliver speeds of up to 32 GT/s, which is double that of its PCIe 4.0 equivalents. While this doesn’t show how fast we can expect from an SSD, we’ve seen business devices run at 13,000 MB/s before and it’s likely these consumer models will run at or exactly the same speed. Such specs would make the 990 Pro one of the best gaming SSDs, if not the best.
We’re not sure exactly which M.2 form factor the Samsung 990 Pro will adopt, but judging by its predecessors, we should expect no less than a 2280 unit. You can probably also choose it with or without a heatsink. thermal. .
If you want to connect the Samsung 990 Pro to your gaming PC, you need to make sure you have one of the best gaming motherboards installed in your system with a compatible processor. Currently, 12th Gen Intel Core processors are the only chips that support the PCIe 5.0 standard, but AMD Ryzen 7000 and Intel Raptor Lake will also support these new fast NVMe SSDs when they become available.
