Valve is taking steps to make good on its promise that its Steam platform release date will be in 2022 if you pre-ordered. This was announced by the manufacturer Steam. Twitter stating that they are again increasing the number of ongoing Steam Deck orders each week and reminding anyone with a pre-order to check their email in case they slip. Valve says that it sends out Steam Deck emails on Mondays and Thursdays during the morning hours. Be sure to keep an eye on your inboxes, and as Valve previously recommended, check other folders. Some Steam Deck emails end up in spam, and while Valve is holding back pre-orders for a few days, that’s not a good stance.
Valve experienced performance issues almost immediately after the laptop’s release, in part because demand was higher than expected. Though the team shouldn’t have been surprised. Unlike Valve’s previous attempts to break into the console realm, including the unfortunate and incredibly expensive Steam Machine, the Steam Deck was an immediate hit and the price was reasonable.
The other limitation has been a shortage of superconductors, but as production returns to pre-pandemic rates, Steam and other hardware manufacturers may gradually increase production again.
Whether that means its post-Q3 date will be earlier or slightly earlier in Q4 than it would otherwise be, Valve hasn’t said. Although this is unlikely. My own Q4 booking has been flat for the last two production increases, but at least it’s pretty much guaranteed for 2022.
