The Oculus Quest 2’s new recording options may be on the cards as v43 of the Meta VR headset software appears to introduce a new settings tab. While you can’t yet capture your favorite VR moments with the tools, the new menu includes several video-related options, including quality, frame rate options, and image stabilization.
Reddit user Deliciouspotato2 noted that the Oculus Quest 2’s recording options are available through the headset’s public test channel. Again, there is currently no way to create a VR game that allows video playback using settings, but the Camera tab of v43 says this is in progress.
Quest 2’s new recording menu offers customizable settings like frame rate, video compression quality, and image stabilization. There’s even an aspect ratio switch so you can set it to 16:9 and avoid the widescreen format on the best gaming monitor. However, the preset also warns that changing the setting “will adversely affect the application’s performance when streaming or recording.” clip creation can come with caveats.
VR enthusiasts have already urged Meta to improve Quest 2’s capture, and the company’s project manager confirmed improvements were planned in January (via UploadVR). Ultimately, the new settings will help creators create better content for sites like YouTube and Twitch, but we’ll have to see how high-end video capture actually affects the headset’s performance.
If the Quest 2 struggles to record live gameplay at high frame rates and low compression, that could prompt creators to consider the Oculus Quest 3 or Project Cambria in the future. However, Meta is moving away from being a provider of cheap VR headsets, as the Oculus Quest 2 now costs more. This suggests that next-gen devices will come at a high price, so perhaps creators will look for a suitable alternative instead.
