The list of games compatible with Valve’s Steam Deck is growing by the second, the 4500 versions now pair well with a portable powerhouse. Big newcomers like Multiversus and Spider-man Remastered have earned their playable and verified stripes since our last review, and a total of 500 titles have become the good books of the gaming laptop PC since July.
Just over two weeks ago, games supported on the Steam Deck numbered just over 4,000 verified and playable builds. Now that number has risen to more than 4,500, with Valve calling 1,989 of them “unbelievable.” While the rest of the 2513s haven’t been green-marked yet, their new playable status means they should still work fine on a mini rig.
Recently, Insomniac Games confirmed that the PC port Spider-Man Remastered verified by Steam Deck, which means that you can enjoy the adventures of Peter Parker on your laptop without any problem. Naturally, you’ll need to tweak the settings to increase the frame rate, as a Marvel game is likely to make even the best graphics cards sweat. However, its inclusion on the verified list is an excellent guarantee of gameplay from Valve, and should help you imagine that the device is the new successor to the Sony Vita.
Multiverus has also earned its Steam Deck stripes as the action movie franchise is now listed as playable. We’re not sure exactly what’s holding it back from proven greatness, but the Smash Bros-esque fighting game runs smoothly on a handheld device.
Needless to say, the Steam Deck is becoming a strong contender in the portable market, and Valve’s proven system helps make it a viable gaming PC. Of course, the device won’t be able to handle the next-gen RTX 4000 and RDNA 3 GPUs, but if performance versatility is your thing, you’re probably better off investing in a mini machine.
Valve has confirmed that it will fill all open orders by the end of 2022, with some pre-orders likely to arrive in the coming weeks. Beginners are also delighted, as the company has made minor improvements to the device’s buttons and haptics, and the Steam Deck experience is now even better. If you’re a little skeptical of the hype, you can wait for Steam Deck 2 to release, but it will probably be a while before the successor takes center stage.
