It looks like the promised Diablo 4 internal beta is underway, with several alleged leaks already appearing online that appear to show trailers for the upcoming RPG. While there are plenty of reasons to be wary of early internal testing leaks (things could change, after all), reports that the fantasy game will feature a smart loot system and avoid trading high-end gear.
A video that surfaced on Reddit showing off the game’s character creation menu was quickly removed, likely because it featured a unique build code that could easily be traced back to the person responsible. However, another source said that rare, fixed, and legendary gear, as well as gold, cannot be traded, and trading lower-tier items is restricted.
Also, the source says that the Diablo 3-style smart loot will be back. This puts a lot of emphasis on dropping gear with the appropriate stats and affixes for the class you’re currently playing, rather than having the same selection from a full set of options. These leaks are in line with previous interviews with Blizzard in which they suggested that the most powerful items should be those that players earn for themselves, rather than being able to trade them.
Both of these topics have sparked community discussions on the Blizzard forums and the Diablo IV subreddit on these topics. Advocates of smart loot say they like how it simplifies progression by ensuring that most gear can be useful to your current character. Obviously, this is especially important for players who prefer to stick to one class. Other players say they’re okay with smart loot as long as it doesn’t affect all of their drops: Diablo 3, for example, drops about 85% of the items you drop for your class, the remaining 15% from anywhere. .
On the other hand, some players say that the increased ability to obtain items for different classes encourages them to play the game with several different characters and experiment. When you run into a particularly tough lock on a class, you can try a version that you might otherwise ignore. If you don’t like it, the exchange option encourages the social element of the game and allows you to get a currency in exchange that suits you. As Redditor XAos13 put it, “Smart mining makes D3 faster at the cost of less fun.”
However, there are certainly arguments against trading. Reddit user SpiritualScumlord states that “playing with a trading economy is a waste of money because it’s just bots and streamers hoarding all the good gear and overloading.” Others are wary of third-party sites that can profit by letting users sell their best gear for real money. In particular, Diablo 3 attempted to bring that capability into the game at launch with its auction house, and it was such an impressive flop that management voted unanimously to remove it.
One part of the Diablo community that has traditionally eschewed trade, even in Diablo 2 where it predominates, are the “SSF” (Self-Found) players. They are people who play alone and only use the material they find. However, due to how often Diablo is played on social media, most gamers seem to agree that SSF should only exist as a style of play on its own, or perhaps as a specific mode. which can be activated when starting a new character.
The Diablo 4 release date is still a long way off, so watch out for more beta spoilers in the meantime. We may not know how co-op loot will work, but we do know what the Diablo 4 level cap and campaign length will be. You can also get early access to the Diablo 4 Tattoo Beta if you want to get your hands on a series-themed ink job as part of the ongoing Diablo Hell’s Ink Tour.
