Commonwealth Games, on the eve of the competition in Birmingham

On August 6 and 7, 2022, esports athletes will come together in the spotlight in Birmingham, UK and compete for the first time on Championships from export belonging Commonwealth. More than 100 athletes representing different countries and territories of the Commonwealth will go head to head in three esports disciplines: DOTA 2, the eFootball™ series and Rocket League for the honor of becoming a champion. The championship, held in connection with the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, represents an extremely important moment in the development of esports. Esports athletes from all over the Commonwealth, including Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania, have completed regional qualifications for the right to compete in Birmingham along with their sports peers.

CEC is a joint initiative between the Global Esports Federation (GEF) and the Commonwealth Gaming Federation (CGF). It will take place at the International Convention Center (ICC) in Birmingham, located in the heart of the city of the Commonwealth Games 2022. Meetings begin daily at 9:00 am and continue until 6:00 pm. The weekend kicks off with Rocket League, where the national divisions of the three teams will face off in what fans and players are calling “flying car football.” Launched in 2015, it is already one of the most popular esports games in the world, with over 75 million downloads. Athletes will also compete in the DOTA 2 Multiplayer Esports Arena (developed and published by Valve). Data shows that it is played in 52% of Commonwealth countries and territories. Each moment will be shown live on GEF’s Twitch and YouTube streaming channels. Freya Spears, known for her big CS:GO tournaments, will take the stage and bring her infectious enthusiasm to the action as esports legend Harry “Wunderkind” Channon leads the eFootball™ series commentary team.
