Apex Legends Season 14: Hunted is right around the corner, and just like any other season, a new legend joins the roster. This time, Vantage and his bat friend Echo are at the Apex Games. The new duo will arrive when the update drops next week, on August 9. You’ll want to know as much as possible about Vantage before then, which is why we’re here to give you some insight into his story, his abilities, and everything else. we found out after attending a recent Season 14 press event.
Xiomara “Mara” Contreras, also known as Vantage, is the youngest legend to join the games, narrowly edging out Rampart as the former is 18 and the latter is 21. He and Horizon try to keep her safe. She doesn’t think the Syndicate, the main organizer of the Apex Games, would choose someone so young to fight to the death, but the truth is that Vantage willingly does it for her mother.
The recent Stories from the Outlands article gives us a look at the backstory that got Vantage into this situation. She was raised by her mother Xenia on the harsh ice planet of Pagos, far from civilization. As a result, she became an excellent marksman and survival expert. However, this isolated upbringing follows her all the way to the Apex Games, making interaction somewhat unpredictable now that she has joined the rest of society.
“It goes without saying that Vantage doesn’t really understand or care about things like social cues, rules and manners now that it’s in civilization,” said Kevin Lee, lead writer at Respawn. “It was never important to the main thing in her life: surviving… She has a really unique dialogue with other survivors and survival legends.”
Upon discovering the remains of the GDS Vantage, the young hunter realized that her mother was a prisoner aboard this ship, serving time for a crime she did not commit. And after Vantage was seriously injured while trying to get out of the rubble, Xenia had no choice but to send an SOS signal that landed her back in jail.
Vantage joined the pageant to bring awareness and attention to her mother’s injustice, and apparently she really had to put in the effort and fight to get Echo to fight her. Her communication can often be seen through the game’s visual narration.
“There has been a lot of work to visually capture the uniqueness of how Echo interacts with Vantage and the environment, as well as their relationships and how they communicate with each other and work together,” said Rachel Gagner, concept artist at Respawn.
Part of this narrative happens when the duo interact during combat, and these are the abilities that will keep them alive in Apex games:
List of benefits
- Passive Ability: Observer’s Lens
Vantage can zoom when unarmed or at high magnification and receive information about enemies that are in the center of its scanning area. This valuable information includes shield level, class, range, and even the number of living members of the opponent’s squad. All of this information can be shared with Vantage teammates by pinging the person being scanned. The analysis also shows the number of bullets ejected with higher magnification scopes, which helps a lot with long range targets.
- Tactical Ability: Move Echo
Vantage can use Echo to switch positions and find the best attack points. He can command Echo to move around the battlefield without using a tactical charge, but when he uses one, he can jump to Echo’s location in a single jump. Echo is also impossible to damage or incapacitate, as it has been confirmed that she is “too cute” to be shot – the correct gameplay move.
- Ultimate Ability: Marksman’s Mark
Hitting a target with Vantage’s special Sentinel Rifle will deal 50 damage and mark them for a time. Enemies will take 100 damage from your rifle after being tagged, as well as increased damage from teammates. His sniper rifle has five rounds, each marking enemies for 10 seconds. The markers aren’t visible through walls though, they just tell teammates who will take the most damage. You can use his sniper rifle as long as you have ammo, and the ammo will start regenerating over time from the start of the match.
During the press conference, we learned that the Vantage had undergone a number of notable changes before receiving the kit you see above.
“Honestly, we started off with a bang, making several different attempts to seriously damage your rifle,” said Chris Winder, Legend designer and Vantage engineer. “So we’re talking about instant impact damage.”
In an attempt to avoid annulling other arms to preserve the “fantastic tireur d’elite” that the team visait, le Vantage n’a subí de gâts supplémentaires qu’après le premier coup avec la que du elite shooter.
“We also started with tactical binoculars,” explained Winder. “We had a great ‘aha’ moment when we tried a prototype tactic where Vant had a bird.”
As you can see, this bird evolved into a little bat called an Echo, giving the Vantage extra mobility so it can move to better sniper spots or get close enough to take down missions from weakened opponents. So his strengths don’t just lie in the amount of damage his ult does.
Overall, Vantage looks like a solid addition to the roster that can potentially devastate opposing teams from range. Her high damage, her mobility, and her intelligence gathering abilities can make her a formidable opponent and likely high-tier teammate.
