Windows 11 has a stowaway because Internet Explorer hasn’t left the browser scene yet. Turns out there’s a way to make a redundant Microsoft app work on the latest version of Windows, because it’s still lurking inside your gaming PC or laptop’s operating system.
Officially, windows 11 does not need to be compatible with Internet Explorer, but an advanced user xenopanther found a way to run it. The outdated browser actually hides on the regular site, as you can find under “Manage Browser Add-ons” in the Internet Options menu (via The Verge). Clicking the “More about toolbars and extensions” hyperlink at the bottom of the window brings the old web browsing tool out of hiding instead of opening a Microsoft Edge tab.
If you are one of the few Internet Explorer fans, you will have to use the above method every time you want to use it, because launching the shortcut on the taskbar will redirect you to Microsoft Edge. The program is not included in the list of installed applications of the operating system, which means that Microsoft probably does not want you to find it. However, if you’re obsessed with using a battle-worn browser, now you know where to find it.
Internet Explorer was finally retired after 26 years of service last month, and its presence in Windows 11 suggests that it hasn’t yet. The browser will likely stick around due to compatibility issues with tools used by organizations and the like, but it’s fun to think that it just won’t go to a nursing home with Windows 8 and other Microsoft Legacy services.
Microsoft’s old Internet browser isn’t the only Windows feature running on borrowed time, as the latest Windows 11 update marks the abolition of Control Panel. The very future of the latest version of the operating system is in jeopardy, as Windows 12 could completely replace it in 2024.
