Stardew Valley developer Eric Barone (ConcernedApe) has shared a new screenshot of his Haunted Chocolatier game. On twitter and answered some questions about how the long-awaited game Life is going. The screenshot itself is a bit enigmatic and raises more questions than it answers. It shows the interior of a building with what looks suspiciously like chocolate used for decoration. Edible balconies? Yes please.
Even if you can’t explore your workplace from the inside, there are a few things worth mentioning. As one of the reviewers pointed out, Baron’s sprites look better than they do in Stardew Valley. You can see the light reflecting off the character’s hair in patches and a hint of creases and creases in his clothing, which is a subtle but significant advance over Stardew’s introduction, which relies on pixelated detail work in the character portraits.
Then there’s the building itself, which we’re assuming is the Chocolatier, though Barone didn’t give any indication of where it actually was. Barone has previously said that Haunted Chocolatier is the moon of Stardew Valley’s sun, a more relaxed and introspective experience, and it’s easy to believe when looking at the new setting.
The new place is steeped in wintry comfort, with its soft torchlight and hint of melancholy, and is a far cry from the brighter homes and furnishings in the valley.
Elsewhere in the thread, Barone answered some questions about the game’s development, saying progress has been “pretty good” so far, though it’s still “in the middle of a long run.” Most of Haunted Chocolatier’s assets are new, and he expects the price to be about the same as in Stardew Valley.
This, of course, is subject to change before Haunted Chocolatier’s release date, whenever that happens.
