Roblox developers are running out fighting hackers

Roblox developers who create competitive games say they are exhausted fighting hackers to the point that some say they no longer want to develop such games on the platform. The problem has escalated to the point where a major developer has gone so far as to claim that he will never make another competitive Roblox game due to a lack of effective sandbox game tools.

While hacks and exploits have long been a topic of discussion in the Roblox community, a developer named Hutch showed the extent of the problem by discussing the status of his game, which he did not name in the post message. On July 1, the Hutch team changed the game from a paid model to a free model. The developer said the game had more than six million views and an average player count of around 2,500, and there were 2,964 moderator bans in July (40% of which were based on user posts) and 25,342 auto bans against traps. at a rate of approximately 817 per day.

“Dealing with exploiters all the time is exhausting and demoralizing. The joy I get from developing games on Roblox doesn’t even outweigh the exhaustion my moderation teams and I experienced,” they wrote on the Roblox developer forums. “This is a much bigger issue than just a cheat protection issue and it never seems like Roblox is making any significant progress in helping developers fix these issues.”

The developer further suggested that he could no longer exclude hackers from his game or report them to the platform and was limited to blocking individual accounts. They also pointed out that the company only has a developer moderation tool, which they say is outdated and lacks the guide to implement the ban system to which it refers.

“Often in conversations about how to combat cheating and exploits, a lot of general advice is given. Advice from the wise “Don’t trust the client”, secure your remotes, do physical checks, etc. This is great advice worth following, but it doesn’t change the fact that we are limited in our ability to deal with problems with our experience,” they said.

“If developers want to control what we can and can’t do with this platform, then Roblox needs to have a much bigger presence to address key usability issues that developers can’t adequately handle.”

The frustration stems from the lack of ability for developers to initiate more permanent bans, such as IP bans. Scammers often get around bans by creating new Roblox accounts, a process that only takes a few seconds. This is a tricky question, as developers’ wiggle room to enforce stricter measures could lead them to abuse their privileges. There are also concerns about how to implement these measures in a way that protects player privacy and protects Roblox from liability.

However, the current process leaves little room for competitive game developers affected by these moderation issues. Although Roblox has the flexibility to allow developers to implement certain solutions that automatically detect hackers and implement automatic bans, current measures do not fully address these issues.

The problem affects many developers, including some of the most famous of Roblox. Polyhex, who created Super Bomb Survival for Roblox and co-wrote Super Doomspire, which won Bloxy Best Sleeper Hit in 2021, tweeted in support of Hutch’s post.

“I have pretty much come to terms with the fact that I will never work competitive play on Roblox again because the experience of holding it against a constant wave of cheaters with no effective tools is a nightmare,” they said.

Unlike highly competitive non-Roblox games like Valorant, which use strict security protocols to protect game lobbies from hackers, Roblox is generally aimed at casual gamers who can jump in and explore all kinds of games. This means that many games don’t need advanced anti-cheat systems, and such a system can be difficult to implement in Roblox’s complex architecture. However, the ease of use and popularity of the platform make it a prime target for hackers. A quick Google search for “roblox hacks” turns up dozens of websites allegedly selling cheats and hacking tools.

As technology continues to grow and evolve, so do the ways hackers attempt to detect vulnerabilities and bypass cybersecurity measures. Recently, a hacker leaked numerous internal Roblox documents after successfully scamming a company employee. Roblox also ran into another problem when users discovered an exploit that automatically banned the Roblox accounts of innocent players.
