Following the announcement that the protagonists of GTA 6 will be a dynamic duo reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde, a new short report has surfaced indicating that the crime game has even more heroes or anti-heroes, depending on your perspective. Axios’ Steven Totilo followed up on Bloomberg’s initial report and said he had already been told by his sources that Rockster planned to have four protagonists in GTA 6. The original plan would have also included three cities. The Bloomberg report says that GTA 6 will be set in one city at launch, Miami, with more locations to be added in future post-launch updates.
Totilo said that the team scaled down GTA 6 to make it easier to develop, which seems to be confirmed by earlier rumors about production issues and the project’s supposed reboot. And that still leaves room for additional playable characters in these future updates, depending on how much of Rockstar’s original story remains intact in these latest content releases.
“Only one city” might seem like a downgrade from the previous goal, but there are signs that Miami in GTA 6 could be a lot more exciting than it seems. Recent events in Grand Theft Auto Online are tied, albeit loosely, to GTA Vice City, as both open with warnings of impending dangerous tropical weather conditions.
On the other hand, having two main characters is, frankly, a much more appealing prospect than having four or more. The three main characters in GTA 5 and the different storylines were great, admittedly, but focusing on just two heroes with a cohesive plot means more opportunities for stronger character development and a different story than you normally get in GTA.
In any case, we will have to wait a bit before we know for sure. A report from Bloomberg, confirmed by Totilo, indicates that GTA 6 is not likely to be released until 2024.
