New Resident Evil Village Update Brings Accessibility Features

The free Resident Evil Village update will be released alongside the Village’s Winter expansion on October 28 and will add several accessibility options, Capcom announced on the official website. Resident Evil Twitter Bill. The update is admittedly small, but it does add some useful options. Chief among these is the ability to change the size, color, and background of subtitles without using the RE Village mods, which is handy considering how many early Village games take place in snow. Not the best setting for deciphering fine white print, which is often hard to piece together at best.

Subtitles will also (finally!) show who is speaking in story mode conversations, rather than just identifying the speaker by voice. Capcom adds subtitles and permanent crosshairs. The reticle currently only appears after zooming in to aim, though it tends to remain even after aiming, much to the annoyance of some.

Capcom hasn’t indicated if it plans to add more accessibility features in future updates, though there’s also no indication that the team is planning this first update – that doesn’t necessarily mean the Village will only get this initial update.

Either way, this is a promising step in the right direction for AAA games in general and Capcom in particular. It’s hard enough dealing with small font sizes and detecting who’s speaking when you’re in an environment that doesn’t contribute audio. But it’s a complete barrier to entertainment for people with disabilities, and frankly, it’s far from the time when adding accessibility became relatively standard practice in development.

The Village Accessibility Upgrade is free, but the Winters expansion will set you back $19.99. Upon exiting, you’ll get a whole new story that follows an adult Rose who is no longer tied to the bank as she comes to terms with the complexity of her strange abilities inherited from Ethan. It also features a new Village Mercenaries mode update, which includes playable characters Lady Dimitrescu and Chris Redfield (name changed).
