Assassin’s Creed: Rift, the next installment in Ubisoft’s long-running stealth sandbox series, is supposed to be set in Baghdad and center around Basima from Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. However, the entire AC series turns 15 in November, with fans discussing possible new directions, including a shift to a more modern Cold War setting.
Until now, Assassin’s Creed has talked a lot about the sword-and-shield melee combat that made the first game unique, and the addition of weapons in the likes of Assassin’s Creed 3 and Black Flag seemed like a reluctant concession to historical accuracy. . . Bringing the series into the 20th century, amid nuclear tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States, will no doubt require a transformation of the core mechanics, but perhaps a decade and a half later that’s what Assassin’s Creed calls for.
“Spy vs. Spy is great for AC,” writes a user on Reddit. “I guess it will be a cross between Syndicate and Chronicles: Russia.”
“Massively,” replies another user. “Berlin from World War II to 1989 would have been an exciting place. Perfect for a true spy thriller.”
Ubisoft already has modern stealth games in the form of Rainbow Six and Splinter Cell, which are currently being planned for a remake that could serve as a blueprint for an Assassin’s Creed revival.
The Cold War setting also looks set to get more attention: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War had a strong campaign, and we’re still curious about Rockstar Agent, which was almost certainly canceled but has an intriguing premise based on in spies.
“I’ve always liked the idea of an AC game, from the end of World War I in Russia to the Cold War,” writes another Assassin’s Creed fan. “You follow the character of a teenager returning from war to a murderous veteran in his 60s. I would like the player to kill Stalin at the end, and the DLC’s epilogue takes place in the last years of the Cold War.”
We have to say that it looks promising, although from what we know at the moment, Ubisoft is focusing on Assassin’s Creed: Infinity, a live service and hub dedicated to the series, which will be constantly updated. Its release isn’t scheduled until 2024, but it’s likely to cover and connect to all future AC standalone titles. Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed: Rift was recently pushed back to 2023.
