nakhon and labyrinth entertainment announced another Gollum postponement to give the team more time to polish the new Lord of the Rings game. Daedalic originally planned to release Gollum in the summer of 2022, then delayed the stealth game’s release to September. In a new delay announcement, Daedalic says it plans to release Gollum “a few months” later than planned. There’s no set release date, though it’s safe to assume we won’t see Stinky’s adventure until 2023 at this point.
“The team has worked hard over the past few years to share our vision of a wonderful story set in a stunning world full of magic and wonder,” the team said in a press release. “We are committed to meeting the expectations of our community and unraveling the untold story of Gollum in a manner consistent with JRR Tolkien’s vision. Daedalic and NACON are grateful for their passionate community and look forward to sharing this unique adventure with them soon.”
As it begins, Gollum tells a story – surprise! – Gollum between his imprisonment and his torture in Mordor and finds a trace of the brotherhood in the mines of Moria. Daedalic previously said that the storytelling team based Gollum’s story on Tolkien’s saga, which means bringing to life moments and places briefly touched on in the app, but with some creative freedom.
Gollum’s journey through Mirkwood is more than just a few fleeting clues, and while he’ll meet key characters like Legolas’ father Thranduil and the wizard Gandalf, Daedalic also creates new characters who act as Gollum’s temporary friends and associates. Whether they disappear to pursue their own goals or are killed and eaten by Gollum is another matter, though we certainly hope Gollum’s choice system doesn’t extend to “kill or be nice to your new elf friend.”
If it comes out in 2023, it already promises to be a good year for Middle-earth fans. Return to Moria, which we call Tolkien Walheim, is also scheduled for release in early 2023.
