In the last few days I have completely immersed myself in skating. But not real, but virtual. I rushed to the stadiums in a dynamic sports shooter Rollerdrome. You read it right. This time I’m avoiding the backstory entirely. The cornerstone of Rollerdrome is the sweet heroine racing through the huge halls. However, this is not an ordinary athlete whose task is to show the maximum possible time on the track. His goal is not only to cover large spaces as quickly as possible, but, above all, to survive. Unlike the free-to-play game Roller Champions, which resembles this part in some elements, it also works with the elements of enemies.
Yes, you read it right. In addition to stunt ramps, there are opponents waiting in space to break your winning streak. The first levels set thugs in front of them, for whom it is a pity for shells. However, over time, it begins to harden, and over time, rough pieces appear on the scene that can make slower competitors really grim with rocket launchers, super-powerful shields and energy discharges. Sometimes I really felt like the X-Men Cyclops was after me. Luckily, the blue beams could be dodged quite well and even temporarily incapacitated with a well-aimed pistol shot.
A gun won’t guarantee victory here
Over time, it is no longer enough for you to successfully pass the hall, it is enough to be able to shoot all enemies as quickly as possible. There are two reasons why you cannot bet on this route. The first one is very significant. You don’t get ammo at the Rollerdrome from crates, but do tricks that most real bodies would have a hard time with. For example, dodging such a missile always requires feline reflexes. Also, all pistols have common ammo tickets, so loading one will automatically add bullets to the others. However, when you fire one, all you hear from the others is a thud.
Another reason is that you can’t keep track of the combos that determine your final score by simply eliminating opponents. You also need to show the audience some kind of trick. Performing various stunts is fun but challenging. I found this to be downright annoying for the keyboard. The movement itself often has to be associated, for example, with shooting, and then you get pleasure. Therefore, the controller is a noticeably better choice for gaming, even if I hate to admit it. The only thing you can do without it is run on railings, run on walls and do simple spins, but that’s about it, because it’s not easy to press the buttons correctly.
Rollerdrome has decent potential
When I first saw the Rollerdrome, I had the impression that it was a dime a dozen. He definitely didn’t look like someone I’d bet on. However, after a few hours of playing, I quickly changed my mind, as the gameplay turned out to be surprisingly addictive. From the moment I started going down the halls, I always felt adrenaline combined with a certain amount of tension about how I would drive the next lap. You are never sure if you will be able to dodge all the hits, perform the tricks correctly and, above all, destroy the enemies before the time limit.
From what I got to experience at the Rollerdrome, I think it’s a very worthwhile event that can draw you into the story. There is even a story set in the world of the future. Overall, I love it and can’t wait to put my virtual skates back on and dive into adrenaline-filled arenas where there’s no shortage of tension.
Rollerdrome’s release date is set for August 16, 2022 when it hits PC, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
