Don’t expect to see blockchain or NFT technology in Minecraft any time soon. The developers of the popular sandbox game have spoken publicly on the issue, saying that these technologies create “patterns of scarcity and exclusion that are contrary to our principles and the spirit of Minecraft.”
In a statement released today, Mojang employees outlined the company’s perspective on blockchain technology, with a focus on NFTs. In a nutshell, “NFT integration with Minecraft is generally not something we support or allow,” but the post details the reasons behind this decision.
A number of companies, as Mojang explains, have recently released Minecraft-related NFT ranges in different ways: some have created NFT asset and skin packs, while others have offered to create NFT packs or NFTs for Minecraft-themed collectibles that are rewarded for the time invested. on certain Minecraft servers. .
“Each of these applications of NFTs and other blockchain technologies creates digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which is inconsistent with Minecraft’s values of creative inclusion and collaborative play,” says Mojang. NFTs do not include our entire community and create a stage for haves and have-nots.”
Also, Mojang is very wary of financial speculation related to NFTs and doesn’t want it to change the way people play Minecraft.
“NFT’s speculative pricing and investment mindset distracts from gaming and encourages profit making, which we believe is incompatible with the long-term joy and success of our players,” says Mojang.
While Mojang says it plans to continue to monitor technological developments in the blockchain space, it is issuing a general rule of thumb for now: None of this applies to Minecraft.
“In order to provide Minecraft players with a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated into our Minecraft server and client applications, nor may they be used to create NFTs associated with any content. of the game, including worlds, skins. , characters. items or other modifications,” the company said in a statement.
Mojang says that the Minecraft guide will soon be updated to reflect this policy.
