Expanding the available storage on your Steam platform is easy with the microSD card slot, but it looks like Valve still has a few bugs to fix in SteamOS before support is truly seamless. Fortunately, the company is actively developing new software features that should help you avoid losing your data or worse.

In response to a Steam Deck support request on Twitter, the Valve UX designer laurent young says the company is “planning to add an SD card eject soft button.” Presumably, this will work the same way ejecting external storage works in Windows, giving you confidence that no data will be transferred to the device before you turn it off.

For now, Ian wants to reassure Steam Deck users that “it’s safe to remove and replace microSD cards while in game mode,” but notes that it definitely shouldn’t be done while the game is running.

When this new mining feature arrives, we may see it on competing gaming laptops as well, as Valve is working with Steam Deck competitors to bring SteamOS to other devices. Until then, you need to make sure you have the best Steam Deck SD card in your personal portable powerhouse.
