Secret research center. Terrorists seeking global destruction. A stealthy agent with the skills to take them down. Sure, it may look like Metal Gear Solid at first, but this is Covert Critter, a standalone love letter to the first in a series of stealth games from Hideo Kojima, where Solid Snake is replaced by a well-trained gecko.

There are eight levels in the Covert Critter game, and Koss must complete each of them without being detected. There he will find various gadgets and equipment that will help him bypass the security system and stop the Red Hawks, a terrorist group planning to launch a nuclear missile.

Inside the levels you’ll find boomboxes, banana peels, recon drones, and more, which also have various secrets for completion enthusiasts to discover. For his part, Koss puts on a blindfold and a smoldering cigarette that Solid Snake had on hand, but instead of a cardboard box, Koss is able to use his innate gecko camouflage ability to sneak away.

Covert Critter is available on itch.io for any amount you’re willing to spend. The developers are sodaraptor for artwork and design, and NormalHumanSixx for features and coding. Covert Critter was built in just 12 days, but the developers say it will take around half an hour. You can always come back to hunt for secret items if you can’t wait for more stealth gecko action.

If you are a fan of old school Metal Gear Solid or just nostalgic for the crooked polygons of the early 3D era in gaming, you need to download Covert Critter.

Of course, the original Metal Gear Solid games are now available on PC thanks to the recent PlayStation Originals update.
