Dwarf Fortress on Steam will feature lush, colorful forests

Dwarves will be able to see the autumn leaves fall when Dwarf Fortress finally arrives on Steam. In new art shared by creator Tarn Adams, the trees in Dwarf Fortress look great, they have a variety of fruits, and the leaves change color from green in the spring and summer to orange and red in the fall, a brand new feature. compared to the original ASCII version of the colony management game. The explosion of color almost makes it look like Stardew Valley.

Like everything else in Dwarf Fortress, the trees are procedurally generated, and Adams says the team is still working out bugs in the placement of the branches. This is an important detail, as trees are not only a source of food and wood, they are also useful when a dwarf has to run away from an angry animal. However, they can only climb thicker branches, so it’s important that everyone points in the right direction.

As veterans of highly detailed games would no doubt expect, Dwarf Fortress has a wide variety of tree types and a wide range of fruit to harvest. In a screenshot posted on Steam, Adams notes the presence of round limes, guava, coffee beans, carambola, kapok, avocados, bitter oranges, cashews, papaya, lemons, lychees, etc.

Each fruit tree blooms, blossoms, and finally bears fruit, after which the leaves turn orange or red and fall to the ground. Adams says the team is still working on the animation effects (and they’re currently using “a really bad placeholder I drew”).

The release date for Dwarf Fortress on Steam is still unknown, but it could be in Early Access this year.
