The Oculus Quest 2 may be Meta’s best VR headset, but the social media giant is said to be “laser-focused” on Project Cambria, a mixed-reality platform planned for this year. While the Quest 2 has established itself as a gaming device, the company is looking to establish itself properly in the metaverse with a new pair of standalone glasses, which in turn could help it overcome difficult financial hurdles.
According to an internal memo on “investment priorities” obtained by Reuters, Cumbrian Project will help achieve the company’s key metaverse priorities of Avatars and Horizon Worlds. Meta product manager Chris Cox also said the Cambria launch will help open up “a range of professional/industrial mixed reality products,” suggesting more devices will be on the map.
The note may cover VR ambitions, but the Oculus Quest 2 isn’t high on the priority list. While you can create an avatar and download Horizon Worlds in Quest 2 for free, it looks like Project Cambria will be the shining star of the company’s metaverse this year.
Cox says CEO Mark Zuckerberg will detail Meta’s priorities in an upcoming Q&A, so potentially more information on Metaverse headsets is on the horizon. The memo may not mention anything related to Oculus Quest, but there’s always a chance we’ll find out more about the Oculus Quest 3, even if it’s not part of the conglomerate’s “prosumer” lineup.
